Although solitary, they gather occasionally around carrion and aggregate for mating. During mating period, males fight over females and territory by grappling with one another upon their hind legs with the loser eventually being pinned to the ground. These males may vomit or defecate when preparing for the fight. The winner of the fight will then flick his long tongue at the female to gain information about her receptivity.

Inter-males agonistic behaviours (aggression) often results in severe cuts and, sometimes, death.

A pesar de ser solitarios, los dragones de komodo se reúnen en torno a la carroña y durante el apareamiento. En el período reproductivo, los machos compiten por las hembras y el territorio luchando sobre sus patas traseras y tratando de morder al oponente. Antes de la pelea, los machos suelen vomitar o defecar dando señas de su agresividad. El ganador del combate se acerca a la hembra y evalúa su receptividad mediante la percepción de semioquímicos (feromonas) que lleva con su lengua al órgano vomeronasal. 

La interacción agonista entre machos (agresión) suele resultar en heridas graves, incluso la muerte.
